Seahawks Coach Shane Waldron Praises 'True Pro' RB Zach Charbonnet
When the Seattle Seahawks drafted UCLA running back Zach Charbonnet in the second round, there was some confusion as to why. After all, Kenneth Walker III is fresh off a dominant rookie season himself.
However, it can never hurt having too much talent in your running back room, especially someone like Charbonnet behind Walker. With rookie minicamp ongoing, offensive coordinator Shane Waldron spoke highly of their new rookie to Seattle Sports.
“I think Zach is a true pro right away. He’s gotten in the building and really been about his business,” Waldron said. “And again, a guy that’s really showed up. I know it’s kind of tough for the different things those guys are getting pulled in all sorts of directions in the leading up to the draft.
"But man, this guy came in in great shape ready to work, and you can tell that he’s a guy that will be able to work 24/7.”
There is a lot to like about Charbonnet and what he brings to the Seahawks offense. In his final season at UCLA he rushed for 1,359 yards and 14 touchdowns, bringing a new wrinkle to Seattle.
Not only does he make the Seattle offense more explosive, though, but Waldron also pointed out the importance of having depth behind your starting running back.
“I think that second running back is, in my mind, just as important as any starter on the field right there," Waldron said. "Just knowing the landscape of the league and a 17-game season-plus and knowing that the ground and pound can can take its toll on some guys."
Charbonnet likely won't be the starter when the season rolls around, with Walker still leading the show. However, having depth is never a bad thing - and after all, Walker shows that adding a running back in the second round could always go very well.
