Can Seahawks Do 'Real Damage' in Playoffs? NFL Power Rankings

After a strong showing last season, the Seattle Seahawks enter the 2023 season just outside of the top 10 in power rankings.
In this story:

Under the guidance of quarterback Geno Smith the Seattle Seahawks were arguably the biggest surprise last season. After all, they were considered a contender for the first overall pick following the trade of Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos.

One year later, though, and it is an entirely different story. The Seahawks enter this season universally seen as a playoff contender, with some analysts believing they can contend for the NFC West - which led to Bleacher Report placing them just outside the top 10 at No. 12 overall in their 2023 power rankings.

"If Smith can repeat the sort of efficiency he showed last year when he led the league in completion percentage and ranked fifth in passer rating and the defense improves, the Seahawks could do more than just win the division," Bleacher Report writes.

"They could do real damage in the postseason."

On paper there is a lot to love about this Seahawks' roster entering the season. Aside from the aforementioned Smith, the offense is loaded with elite weapons. The receiver duo of DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett are among the best in the league, with rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba giving them a three-headed monster of receivers.

Lining up behind Smith you have second-year running back Kenneth Walker III, who showed in his rookie season he has what it takes to be a lead back.

Defensively, there is definite room for improvement as well as reason to be optimistic. A cornerback duo of Tariq Woolen and first-round draft pick Devon Witherspoon anchor the secondary, while a revamped defensive front featuring the likes of offseason addition Dre'Mont Jones will hold it down on the line of scrimmage.

The Seahawks hope that last season was just a preview of what's to come, and not just a one-hit wonder. If they can take more steps forward this season across the board, then there is no reason they can't compete for an NFC West title.
