Seahawks QB Geno Smith Starting vs. Cowboys: Preseason Preview
The Seattle Seahawks host the Dallas Cowboys at Lumen Field on Saturday night in the second of their three preseason games. This matchup is highlighted by a deeper look at preseason standouts and and a few key position battles.
Additionally, Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith will be getting the start, per Seattle general manager John Schneider, who announced the news on the team's pre-game radio show.
Most of the Seahawks starters, including Smith, watched from the sidelines during last week's exhibition game. Though Smith will play, Drew Lock will also get some important action. The majority of the Cowboys starters, including quarterback Dak Prescott, will be out against the Seahawks as well.
The wait continues to see if Seattle's first team can pick up where they left off last season. Smith had made it clear that he doesn't want to wait to play.
“Yeah, I would like to [play vs. Cowboys]," Smith said earlier in the week. “I would love to play. Any time I get an opportunity to go out there with my guys, it's always a great opportunity. I love the game, I love to play. I’m looking forward to it, I can’t wait to get out there.”
However, this preseason is an excellent opportunity to watch competitions at starting center, outside linebacker and cornerback.
Plus, a chance to watch more rookie magic.
First-round receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, second-round running back Zach Charbonnet and undrafted wideout Jake Bobo all had good showings offensively in their NFL (preseason) debuts.
Smith-Njigba hauled in three of his four targets for 25 yards, while Charbonnet took four carries for 14 yards with a long of nine. Bobo proved productive as well, leading Seattle in receiving with three grabs for 55 yards and a score.
On defense, keep an eye to see if Seattle's rookies can continue their disruptive play... Second-round outside linebacker Derick Hall, fifth-round defensive lineman Mike Morris, sixth-round safety Jerrick Reed II and undrafted corner Lance Boykin.
Seattle's many roster hopefuls try to earn their spot before Tuesday, Aug. 29, when every NFL team must reduce its roster to no more than 53 players. Dallas' 16-player practice squad will then begin to form.
RECORDS: Seattle Seahawks (1-0 preseason) vs. Dallas Cowboys (0-1 preseason)
ODDS: Seattle is a 7-point favorite vs. the Cowboys.
GAME TIME: Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023 at 7 p.m. PT

THE FINAL WORD: Coach Pete Carroll on linebacker Jordyn Brooks' return. Brooks passed his physical on Tuesday and Seattle activated him from the PUP list.
"It’s a fantastic return. As good as he looks, you would never know there is something wrong with him. You cannot see it when you watch him run, change directions, and break on the ball."
