We recently suggested that maybe, all things considered, Jamal Adams and the Seattle Seahawks might be best-served by taking a break from one another, especially as Adams "has not been able to get all the way where he's got everything feeling right.''

And on Saturday, ahead of a key Week 17 game against the Steelers, that separation has come ... with the Seahawks moving Adams to IR, likely finishing his season.

There is a reasonable possibility that would explain the recent unfortunate behavior - not to mention the recent subpar play - of safety Adams, a once-upon-a-time star who in his post-surgery time is not the same player the Seattle Seahawks traded a treasure chest to acquire.

In addition to the knee injury that is being cited now? That reasonable possibility centers on a mental health concern, something we do not mention frivolously. It's impacted our family. It's likely impacted yours.

And maybe it is impacting the Seahawks, too. ... in a way they are careful to not speak of, and in a way that causes us to wonder if privately, the club would be fine if he "stayed home from work'' permanently.

"It's been so difficult on him,'' coach Pete Carroll said of Adams' physical battle to rehab through lingering knee soreness stemming from a torn quad tendon that essentially cost him the entire 2022 season. "He has not been able to get all the way where he's got everything feeling right.''

That's "physical.'' But it can also be "psychological.'' Put it all together and we try to manage some understanding of why, as Seattle recently grabbed its a signature 20-17 upset win over the Philadelphia Eagles on "Monday Night Football,'' Adams was not in attendance at Lumen Field.

"I think he was at home," Carroll said of Adams' absence.

'I'll Go Lower!' Why Won't Jamal Adams Stop This?

Is that acceptable? Is his social media attack on a reporter's wife acceptable? Is his often-surly mood in the locker room acceptable? Is his game-losing involvement in a touchdown allowed to Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson in a loss and a 54-yard touchdown allowed to 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel in another loss - all part of a relatively poor season - acceptable?

Carroll chose to scratch Adams from the lineup on Monday. Adams responded by choosing to not come to work, where - if his head is right - he could've helped guide guys like Julian Love (his replacement, who created four takeaways in the last two weeks and just won NFC Defensive Player of the Week) and Quandre Diggs and Devon Witherspoon and other youngsters to even more success.

Last week, on Christmas Eve, Seattle made another push by winning at the Titans. The Seahawks now control their own playoff destiny - two wins in the next two weeks. And if Jamal Adams chooses to come to work in a way of offering aid? He'll now officially be doing it from the sideline.
