Kenny Pickett, Matt Canada Take Huge Step for Steelers
PITTSBURGH -- Kenny Pickett has finally arrived? Maybe. But the Pittsburgh Steelers Week 3 win over the Las Vegas Raiders was a prime example of where this offense should be headed.
In a game where all the pressure was on offensive coordinator Matt Canada and his second-year quarterback Pickett, the two stepped up. It didn't happen early, as the Steelers started three-and-out three times in a row. But once it clicked, it continued to click, and they showcased exactly what they were missing.
Starting with Pickett, he's still having trouble staying in the pocket. There were plenty of moments when he left the pocket early and his happy feet forced a play to either be a throwaway or a sack.
When he stayed put, though, good things happened. He found George Pickens over the middle, Calvin Austin deep and was even able to run successfully once he allowed a play to develop.
At times, it was the Kenny Pickett he should be if he took the second-year leap.
Then, there was Canada. Before the game, reports came out that the Steelers were changing their offensive coordinator's job duties, adding working daily with Pickett to his list.
The reaction was not pleasant, as social media erupted with confusion and anger at the decision.
Again, the play-calling wasn't perfect, but it had its moments. Pickens was utilized across the middle, the running game wasn't predictable, and there was play-action.
What happened was the Steelers' offense finally clicked. They scored 23 points and fed off of their defense's dominance.
Pittsburgh doesn't need to be perfect, they just need to be good enough not to lose games. They've always stood by the idea that if you can score more than 20 points, you should be able to win a game. In this showing, they were a group capable of doing so.
The Steelers currently sit first in the AFC North following a loss by the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3. Their defense has everything working for them, their special teams looks great and they have the superstars on both sides of the field. What they need to be consistent is their offense. But against the Raiders, they took a massive step in the right direction.
