Steelers Advised to Take 'Serious Look' at Free Agent ILB

The Pittsburgh Steelers next starting inside linebacker could be hitting the free agent market in the next two weeks.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers only have one starting inside linebacker on their roster in Myles Jack. Their plans for the second starting position seem to be second-year seventh-round pick Mark Robinson, a return of Robert Spillane, or another addition in free agency or the NFL Draft.

For one Tennessee Titans beat writer, Pittsburgh needs to begin scouting David Long, who's set to hit the open market in just two weeks.

During an appearance on 93.7 The Fan, Titans beat writer Jon Burton advised the Steelers to take a "serious look" at Long during the free agency process.

"Even though he is an undersized middle linebacker, he's feisty, he's physical, he plays with an edge," Burton said. "He would fit in nicely with the Steelers. I think Steelers fans would love that guy."

Burton doesn't see the Titans being able to re-sign him this spring, and the Steelers are a team who could be willing to pay for another starting inside linebacker.

Jack's contract is set to take on an $11.25 million cap hit this year, but it doesn't feel he's considered a cap casualty now. So, if Pittsburgh were to add Long, whose market value is estimated at two years, $9.8 million, they'd pay roughly $16 million toward the position this season.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Steelers are expected to make a push at inside linebacker either in free agency or the NFL Draft.
