Steelers WR Diontae Johnson Sent Home With Illness

It's unknown how serious the illness is for the Pittsburgh Steelers wideout.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are now monitoring an illness Diontae Johnson is working through, as the wideout was sent home from the facility and did not practice, according to TribLive's Joe Rutter. 

Johnson has been a hot topic of conversation throughout the week after he was caught on film giving no effort during a fumble in the team's Week 13 game with the Cincinnati Bengals. He then addressed the team afterward, apologizing for the moment and promising it won't happen again. 

In Rutter's report, Johnson's missing practice was not due to his incident and was only because his illness. 

Diontae Johnson did not practice Thursday for the Steelers. Nothing nefarious in relation to what transpired in Cincinnati. He was sent home with an illness.

The Steelers are now keeping an eye on two key receivers this week with Johnson missing practice and Calvin Austin working his way back from an ankle injury. Austin has been on the field the last two days of practice, likely meaning he's headed toward playing in Week 13. 

Johnson's situation will be one to monitor the next two days. If he misses practice again tomorrow, he'll only have a walk-through to prepare for the Arizona Cardinals. As a veteran, he likely doesn't need a full day of practice to play, but with the severity of his illness unknown, it's uncertain if he'll be healthy enough to play over the weekend.
