Steelers Eying Two CBs in NFL Draft
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers will do their homework on a number of defensive backs during the NFL Combine, but two names have emerged as their favorites within the 2024 NFL Draft class.
With cornerbacks set to take the stage at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the Steelers are keeping a close on on two prospects. Both are considered first-round picks, and have high interest from Pittsburgh, All Steelers has learned.
Those prospects are Toledo's Quinyon Mitchell and Iowa's Cooper DeJean.
After a stellar performance at the Senior Bowl, Mitchell skyrocketed up draft boards, putting himself firmly in the first round of the NFL Draft. NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah has tabbed him the Steelers' "home run pick" at number 20, and if he falls to them, he may be their top prospect.
Mitchell played four years at Toledo, recording 123 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, six interceptions, 45 passes defensed and two touchdowns.
DeJean is also considered a first-round pick, but isn't climbing as they enter the NFL Combine. Due to a late-season leg injury, he won't be testing in Indianapolis, and will wait to workout for teams closer to the draft.
The Steelers will likely be in attendance for Iowa's Pro Day, and could host DeJean as one of the top 30 visits.
During his three seasons with the Hawkeyes, he recorded 120 tackles, five tackles for loss, seven interceptions, 13 passes defensed and three touchdowns.
With a loaded draft class at cornerback, the Steelers are looking to add a second young star alongside Joey Porter Jr. Patrick Peterson remains on the roster, but could be viewed as a cap causality, or may be moved to safety this summer. Cory Trice and Darius Rush are the only other cornerbacks on the roster, and neither are guaranteed to play a role in 2024.
If Mitchell or DeJean are available with the 20th pick, chances are high one of them is headed to Pittsburgh.
