Steelers Named Landing Spot for Eagles Star
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers could make a massive addition to their already loaded defensive line this offseason in the form of another former All-Pro veteran.
Pro Football Focus named the Steelers as a potential landing spot, alongside the New York Jets, for free agent defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, who's built a legendary career in Philadelphia but could move across the state to finish his time in the NFL.
"Steelers assistant general manager Andy Weidl came aboard from the Philadelphia Eagles last offseason, and here he recruits Cox to join a rotation featuring Steelers legend Cameron Heyward and explosive rookie Keeanu Benton," PFF's Brad Spielberg said. "Pittsburgh has already begun shedding some bigger salaries this offseason, and while Larry Ogunjobi has been solid, perhaps there would have to be a one-for-one swap of sorts there."
Cox, 33, is on the back end of his career but he still has plenty left in the tank, according to Speilberg. And the Steelers could get the most out of him with a deep group of defensive linemen to rotate through.
"Cox had a bounce-back 2023 season after one of the least productive seasons of his career in 2022, and he played a massive role despite the addition of two first-round interior defenders in recent years, among other, younger additions," Speilberg wrote. "The veteran still has good football left in him, and while you may not want him playing 700-plus snaps, he is plenty capable."
Cox played the third-fewest snaps of his career in 2023. He started in 15 games and accounted for 33 total tackles, three tackles for loss and five sacks while playing 66% of Philadelphia's defensive snaps.
He signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Eagles after the 2023 season, with most of the money tied to a prorated signing bonus paid out over the next four seasons, per Over The Cap.
