Steelers Legend Jerome Bettis, Larry Fitzgerald Exchange Blows Before Golf Match
PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers legend Jerome Bettis and Pitt legend Larry Fitzgerald are by no means enemies. Even if The Bus went to Notre Dame, and Fitzgerald Pitt, and the two never played on the same team, they represent the same city, and in Pittsburgh, that creates a special bond.
But when it comes to the golf course, no one is your friend. And before the American Century Golf Tournament at Lake Tahoe, the two Pittsburgh city superstars exchanged a few (funny) jabs.
"My biggest rival is Larry Fitzgerald," Bettis said via WPXI. "He's always trying to figure out what my number is going to be. ... Last year we tied. It's always, who's going to beat who."
Bettis said the two always make a wager before hitting the course, adding a little something extra to the match.
Fitzgerald stuck with a milder approach when talking about Bettis, but didn't hold back about his on-course "nemesis."
"I wouldn't say we're rivals. I'm a Pittsburgh guy. He's a Pittsburgh guy. We both love the city of Pittsburgh, and all the organizations and people from inside. I'm not a rival of his," Fitzgerald said. "I just like beating him up on the golf course. I wouldn't call that a rivalry. I enjoy getting in his pockets. It's pretty easy place to get. Especially now, he can't hit it as far, the putting has gotten a little shaky, the chipping is not as good. So, he's easy money. For anybody in Pittsburgh that wants to get in Jerome Bettis' pocket, there's no better time than now."
The American Century Golf Tournament started on July 14 and runs through July 16. Bettis tees off at 7:59 and Fitzgerald tees off at 8:48. Steelers cornerback Patrick Peterson is also playing, and tees off at 8:39.
