Steelers Giving Joey Porter Jr. Chance to Start

The Pittsburgh Steelers are open to their second-round pick earning a starting job.
In this story:

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers aren't walking into training camp with Joey Porter Jr. as the starter at cornerback, but he's eligable to "earn" the job over the next four weeks.

Speaking ahead of the team's first training camp practice, general manager Omar Khan said that while Dan Moore Jr. remains the starter at left tackle, first round pick Broderick Jones will have an opportunity to fight for the job.

"He's got to earn it," Khan said. "We drafted him in the first round for a reason."

Those same rules will apply to second-round pick Porter Jr. The Steelers have two proven veterans in Levi Wallace and newly-signed Patrick Peterson, who combined for 245 career starts in the NFL. Still, they're open to Porter being on the first as the CB1 if he proves worthy.

"That's what camp is for," Khan said. "Competing. We put the best 11 guys out on the field on defense, and best 11 guys out on the field on offense."

The Steelers have already started to utilize Porter during first team reps during OTAs and minicamp. Heading into training camp, he'll likely be in the rotation to continue with those reps as the team tries to find the perfect mix of their big three corners.

By the time they suit up against the San Fransicso 49ers, the 32nd overall pick could be in the starting lineup.
