PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers rookie Keeanu Benton has been ruled out for the remainder of the team's preseason opener after suffering an ankle injury, according to sideline reporter Missi Matthews.

Benton was lighting up the Buccaneers offensive line before his departure, finishing the game with three tackles, but being noticeably dominant in the middle.

During the third quarter, the second-round rookie was seen walking to the locker room with trainers, who were monitoring his ankle. Matthews then reported he would not return to the game as they continued to evaluate the injury.

Benton is competing for a starting spot against Breiden Fehoko, Armon Watts and Montrevius Adams. He appeared to be on the fast track to winning the competition after his performance in Tampa Bay, but the injury to his ankle could hinder that battle.

All Steelers will continue to update Benton's status as more information becomes available.
