Steelers Defender Named Cap Casualty

The Pittsburgh Steelers are being pushed to release a starting defender.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers will have salary decisions to make this offseason as they try to work their way under the cap prior to the 2024 season. Currently, they stand $15.149 million over the expected salary cap of $242.5 million. To drop below, they'll look at veterans with significant cap hits, and one publication believes they should consider a defensive lineman.

Bleacher Report highlighted Larry Ogunjobi as one of three names the Steelers can release to clear cap space this offseason. The other two were wide receiver Allen Robinson and quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

"Ogunjobi is by no means a bad player, but his production doesn’t quite match his price point," Bleacher Report writes. "Pittsburgh needs to bolster a defense that ranked 21st in yards per rush allowed, and moving on from Ogunjobi could be part of the process."

Ogunjobi will hold a $13 million cap hit in 2024. If the Steelers choose to release him prior to June 1, they'll save $6 million. If they release him after June 1, they'll save $9.75 million.

The Steelers aren't pressed for moves just yet. If they were to release offensive tackle Chukwuma Okorafor and Robinson, Pittsburgh would be above the salary cap floor with $2.1 million to spend.

They also have other options, such as Trubisky, Patrick Peterson, and Keanu Neal. While Ogunjobi could still be an option, the Steelers will likely look at the above players before they begin cutting starters to their defense.
