Steelers Will Limit Kenny Pickett vs Buccaneers
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers will roll their first-team offense out against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their preseason opener, but won't let their starting quarterback play very long. According to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac, Kenny Pickett is set to play just one series before being benched.
Head coach Mike Tomlin said coming into the game that there was no hardcore plan for Pickett and his expectations on playing time.
"We'll play it by ear. We'll give him what he needs," Tomlin said. "That's always my mentality. I'm open to all that are healthy, playing. How much they will play will be determined by what it is they need to be a productive step in the process for them."
It appears they'll start slow this preseason and try to keep their quarterback fresh.
As for the backups, Mitch Trubisky, Mason Rudolph and Tanner Morgan will all see the field, according to Dulac. Trubisky will likely run with the second-team, followed by Rudolph and then Morgan. The undrafted rookie could see extended time in the second half.
