Steelers Acknowledge Punting Problem
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers will explore ways to improve their punting this offseason after a disappointing close to the 2023-24 campaign from Pressley Harvin.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin recognized in his final press conference of the year that Harvin did not play up to the organization's expectations or needs this season.
"I'll acknowledge that Pressley was not consistent enough," Tomlin said. "Particularly down the stretch."
Harvin ranked seventh in total punts during the 2023-24 season and 11th in total punting yards, but averaged just 43.9 yards per punt, which ranked 32nd of 33 qualified punters in the NFL this year.
He was particularly poor down the home stretch of the regular season and into the playoffs. Harvin averaged 41.62 yards per punt, netted just an average of 36.9 yards per kick and landed only 35.9% of his punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line during the final eight games of the regular season.
Against the Buffalo Bills on Wild Card Weekend, Harvin averaged an abysmal 38.5 yards on his four punts and none landed inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
The Steelers added veteran punter Brad Wing to their practice squad prior to the playoff game in Buffalo and will likely continue to seek upgrades at that position this spring and summer.
