Steelers Named Contender for Chiefs CB

One ESPN insider believes the Pittsburgh Steelers will approach a ballhawk cornerback this offseason.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers will likely be on the cornerback search this coming offseason as they look to add a piece next to Joey Porter Jr. for the future. And one publication believes the Kansas City Chiefs have an option that fits them well.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler ranked the top 25 upcoming free agents and the buzz and predictions surrounding them. With the Steelers looking for a splash trade with the Chicago Bears for Jaylon Johnson at the deadline, the ESPN insider believes they'll be back in the mix for a talented veteran in free agency. For Chiefs cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, the expectation is he'll be with one of four teams, and the Steelers will be one of them.

"Sneed’s do-it-all style will translate well to free agency, with the ability to play press coverage on the outside or be physical in the slot," Fowler writes. "Kansas City would like to keep Sneed and has had preliminary contract talks with him, but right now both sides appear focused on the current season. Talks could reignite after it ends, and if they go nowhere, Sneed is a franchise tag or free agency candidate. Enough contending teams were looking for a corner at the trade deadline — including Buffalo, San Francisco, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh — that the market will be viable for him."

Sneed was the Chiefs' fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and has since started 47 of his 50 games played. The veteran corner has collected nine interceptions and 6.5 sacks, and has allowed just a 50% completion rate this season.

The Steelers will have to re-sign Levi Wallace after the season if they choose to keep him around. And while Patrick Peterson has another year on his current deal, he could be an option as a depth piece for his final season. Cory Trice Jr. and Darius Rush will likely stick around as developmental pieces.
