Steelers Rookie Nick Herbig Calls Out Critics
PITTSBURGH -- Nick Herbig has been a terror for opposing offenses during the Pittsburgh Steelers preseason run. The fourth-round rookie has recorded 3.5 sacks in his first two NFL games, and has quickly sparked attention on how high his ceiling may be.
The change has been drastic since his NFL Draft selection. At the time, the debate was whether or not Herbig would play outside or inside because of his size. Having historically short arms for the position, many doubted his ability to dominate at the NFL level, but so far, he's put those critics to rest.
"Dynamite comes in small packages," Herbig said after the Bills game. "I know the player I am. None of that matters to me."
Herbig's use of the cross-chop as he got to Buffalo Bills quarterback Matt Barkley and forced a fumble was credited to T.J. Watt. Herbig has raved about the ability to learn from Watt, Alex Highsmith and Markus Golden, who are already turning the rookie into a force.
"I mean, I got three All-Pros in my room, why wouldn’t I take from them," Herbig said. "There’s some of the best ever to touch the field at my position. So, you know, a wise man once said to be a sponge and soak up all the information that you can."
So far, the knowledge the veterans have taught him has paid off, and from the looks of it, Herbig is on his way to a successful rookie season with the Steelers.
