Steelers Have Players in Mind for Slot CB
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers recently released veteran slot cornerback Arthur Maulet, with reports claiming he asked to be let go in order to search for a new home this summer.
Now, they look forward with an opening in the secondary. While many wonder which player in the cornerback room will fit the nickelback/slot position best, the Steelers have two names in mind they'll test out during mini and training camp.
During an appearance on 93.7 The Fan, general manager Omar Khan said the team is looking at recently-signed Chandon Sullivan and practice squad player Duke Dawson as potential fillers at the slot.
"So that’ll all shake out, you know, I’m all for competition regardless of position," Khan said. "But you know, Chandon Sullivan who we signed, he’s played in that role in Minnesota and Green Bay. Duke Dawson was on our practice squad last year from Florida, originally drafted in the 2nd round, but we think he has a chance to compete there."
Sullivan was signed during the 2023 NFL Draft and comes to Pittsburgh with 30 starts in the last three years. Last season, he recorded 60 tackles and seven pass deflections while with the Minnesota Vikings.
Dawson spent most of last season on the Steelers' practice squad, and has played on an active roster for just two seasons since being drafted in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. In 26 games, he's recorded 27 tackles and two pass deflections.
Khan also said some of the younger players will get an opportunity to compete.
"We’ll see some of these young guys this weekend," Khan said, "but we’re sure after Latrobe, we’ll have the right guys in place."
Pittsburgh could test players like Madre Harper, Tre Norwood and Cory Trice Jr. as the slot as well.
