PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have continued to make moves that create cap space for them before the star of free agency next week.

The Steelers will release veteran cornerback Patrick Peterson, according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, clearing some cap space and room for the team to add another cornerback either through the draft or free agency.

Cutting Peterson will save the Steelers $6,850,000 in cap space but he will still count for $2,925,000 in dead money. The Steelers signed Peterson to a two-year $14 million contract prior to the start of the 2023 season.

Peterson appeared in all 17 games and started 16. He made 42 total tackles, picked off two passes and defended 11 passes overall. As the Steelers dealt with loads of injuries at the safety position, Peterson took some snaps as a strong safety to help fill the gap.

It was believed that Peterson could consider a long-term move to safety to help extend his career but if that happens, it won't be with the Steelers.

Pittsburgh still has standout rookie Joey Porter Jr. under contract, so are Corey Trice and Darius Rush, but the rest of the cornerback ranks are thin. The Steelers will have continue to searching for replacements this offseason.
