Steelers Get New Timetable for Justin Fields Trade
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are still searching for an answer at quarterback, and if they are still in on a trade for Justin Fields, they now have some understanding of when a move will be done.
After earlier speculation was that the Chicago Bears would make a deal - or at least have the pieces in place for a deal - during the NFL Combine, it's now apparent they're going to wait. The next time the quarterback could likely be on the move is following the first round of free agent signings, which will likely include a few quarterbacks joining new teams.
According to NFL insider Benjamin Allbright, the Bears are going to see if they can find a taker before the NFL Draft, following the first series of signings in free agency.
The price tag for Fields appears to be dropping, and could now be as low as a third-round pick. The Steelers likely weren't in on a quarterback deal for a first or second-rounder but could view Fields as an option for a cheaper price.
Depending on how free agency shapes out early, Pittsburgh could still be in the running. That will depend on Mason Rudolph's destination and whether or not they have the ability to sign someone like Russell Wilson for a cheaper contract, without having to give up a draft pick.
