Steelers Have Two Trade Options for Jets

The Pittsburgh Steelers have options if the New York Jets need a quarterback.

PITTSBURGH -- With the struggles of Kenny Pickett in Week 1, the Pittsburgh Steelers can't be certain about their quarterback situation. But chances are they're deadlocked on the second-year QB starting all 17 games this season, which means they have two options to trade with a team that needs a passer - like the New York Jets.

The Aaron Rodgers was loud coming into the season. The NFL's biggest story was about to explode, and a home game on Monday Night Football was the perfect way to kick it off - until it wasn't.

Rodgers lasted four plays before going down with an ankle injury that is believed to be a torn achilles. Right now, the Jets' only option is Zach Wilson, with no other quarterback on the active roster, and Tim Boyle on their practice squad.

Even if Wilson is their top option as the starter in 2023, for now, they need a backup QB. Plus, they're 1-0 and beat a Buffalo Bills team that is still believed to be one of the best in the AFC, so expectations are high for New York.

Maybe they're looking for a trade. And if they are, the Steelers offer two options that should be considered, and dealt, if the price is right.

Mason Rudolph is the name everyone will toss out immediately. Every time a team needs a quarterback, he's the one that draws attention out of Pittsburgh. He's third on the depth chart and hasn't started a game since 2021, and there's little chance he will do so this season, either.

Mitch Trubisky also makes a lot of sense, though. He's experienced, was believed to be starter-capable last season, and has the athleticism to be an option, even if his play as a passer has bumps.

The Arizona Cardinals grabbed Josh Dobbs from the Cleveland Browns for a fifth-round pick, and if you're offering that to the Steelers for one of their QBs, they'd have to say yes, right?

At some point, holding onto backup quarterbacks just because stops making sense. At this point, Pickett is your starter, your captain, and a veteran in the NFL. Pittsburgh has no excuse to keep everyone else around as a safety net for their young QB's maturation process.

If New York is looking for a quarterback, the Steelers have two they can offer up.
