Russell Wilson Welcomes Justin Fields to Steelers
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have a new quarterback room, signing Russell Wilson and acquiring Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears. And as the veteran of the group - and technically the long-tenured QB on the roster - Wilson made sure to welcome his new running mate.
The Steelers landed Fields for a conditional sixth-round pick that could turn into a fourth-round pick depending on playing time. The move comes a day after the team traded former first-round selection Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Wilson is expected to be the starter this season, but he'll likely also be viewed as a mentor to Fields, who's started 38 games in the NFL. With a warm welcome in mind, he made sure to tweet at Fields and share his excitement.
Wilson was expected to compete with Pickett during training camp, but is viewed as the starter ahead of Fields following the trade.
Pittsburgh typically brings three quarterbacks into the season and is expected to do so again this year. As they wait to add a third member to the roster, Fields and Wilson will get acquainted, and if all goes well, the Steelers could have two starting-caliber quarterbacks on their team heading into the season.
Pickett's trade came after he didn't handle the news of Wilson's signing well. As of now, the team appears to have a friendly tandem with their new room of Wilson and Fields.
