'Why Not Houston!’ Texans Trending For AFC South Title?

The only way to go is up in the AFC South for the Houston Texans' after finishing with the division's worst record for the first time since 2017.
In this story:

After the last three seasons the Houston Texans have had, the playoffs feel like a pipe dream.

The Texans finished dead last in the AFC South a season ago and are welcoming a new head coach and quarterback in 2023. It feels like a rebuilding season is ahead in Houston, but the "Good Morning Football" crew seems to believe a division crown is not that far out of their grasp.

"Right now, the Jags are the class of the division, probably the team everyone's chasing, but [the Texans] are on even playing field with everyone else," NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe said. "The Colts have a rookie quarterback in Anthony Richardson. The Titans are in a transition right now. They have Ryan Tannehill and Will Levis. Why can't C.J. Stroud jump them ahead of the Colts, ahead of the Titans and be right there as a top challenger for the Jags?"

Wolfe said six wins would be "a great Year 1 step" for Houston before chasing its first AFC South title since 2019.

NFL Network's Jane Slater said the Texans have some "energy" after going "all in" on quarterback C.J. Stroud and edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. in the NFL Draft.

"This division is sort of wide open, and I've got a lot of faith in DeMeco Ryans," Slater said. "They've got some of the pieces, but why not Houston?"

And the way things change in the NFL from year to year, and division to division, 'why not' is a fair question indeed.
