TE Power Rankings: Where's Cowboys Ex Dalton Schultz for Texans?
There is no denying that there is plenty of room for improvement for the Houston Texans on offense. Last season they ranked 30th in scoring offense, averaging just 17 points per game on 283.5 yards of total offense.
Knowing that an upgraded was severely needed, the Texans attacked this offseason in strong fashion. They landed their franchise quarterback in C.J. Stroud in the draft, as well as signing tight end Dalton Schultz in free agency.
Schultz gives Stroud a reliable target in the passing game as he transitions to the NFL and bolsters Houston's offense, both reasons that landed him at No. 9 on CBS Sports' top 10 tight end list.
"While his final season in Dallas wasn't as productive as his prior two campaigns, he's still among the top pass-catching tight ends in the league and should be a solid outlet for No. 2 overall pick C.J. Stroud," CBS Sports writes.
"He also is an underrated blocker, grading as the fifth-best run-blocking tight end in the league in 2022, per Pro Football Focus."
Last season for the Dallas Cowboys, the veteran tight end was the team's second-leading receiving option, recording 57 receptions for 577 receiving yards and five touchdowns. If he can bring that production with him then it bodes well for Houston.
Signing Schultz - a theoretical "$10 million tight end'' who came here for a bit more than half of that - was one of the best moves the Texans made this offseason, as he adds a veteran receiving option for Stroud to work with. That, paired with his ability to open the ground game with his blocking skills, will help Houston's offense dramatically in his first season.
