J.J. Watt Reveals Thoughts On Texans Roster Moves

Houston Texans legend J.J. Watt believes his former team is 'back on track.'
In this story:

The Houston Texans' 2022 season was simply one to forget. … and J.J. Watt knows it.

Their 3-13-1 record resulted in the firing of coach Lovie Smith and offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton.

Houston filled those holes quickly by hiring San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans as the next coach and Ryans brought along offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik for the same position. The Texans also hired Arizona Cardinals defensive line coach Matt Burke to be the next defensive coordinator.

Things only heated up when they selected Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud with the second overall pick in the NFL Draft to replace Davis Mills as the starter. Just a couple of minutes later, they made perhaps the biggest splash in the draft by trading up and selecting Alabama edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. with the very next pick.

Texans legendary defensive end Watt spoke on "Green Light with Chris Long" about his former team's offseason moves and additions, stating that Houston is on target.

"I think this offseason has been as good as they can do for getting that thing back on track," Watt said.

Watt explained that Ryans is a great fit for Houston's culture, but the organization has to be patient and let him do his thing.

"You hire DeMeco, you gotta give him a long leash to give him the ability to build his process, to build his program, to get the guys he wants," Watt said.

Watt believes that drafting Stroud and Anderson was essential to the beginning of Ryans' regime.

"This huge splash in the draft signifies we are getting the assets to our new coach," Ryans said. "We are turning this thing around and we are putting this thing on a path forward."

Watt firmly stated that the Texans know that they are making the right moves, doing so one step at a time.

"I think this offseason really signified 'Hey, we're gonna do this thing and we're gonna do it right'," Watt said.

The NFL community will catch a glimpse at the Texans' future during training camp, which starts on July 26 at 9 a.m. CT.
