Texans' New Year's Resolution: Take A Swing In Free Agency?
The Houston Texans have been one of the biggest surprises in the NFL this season, overcoming three straight losing seasons to re-emerge as a playoff contender.
While the season is not yet over and the Texans can still make the playoffs, after that, they then must look to the offseason to improve further. As hard as breaking out of the basement is, making the jump from good to great is arguably even harder.
This offseason will be an interesting one to watch in Houston, and as the calendar flips to 2024, CBS Sports suggests that the Texans' New Year's resolution should be to spend big to support rookie sensation C.J. Stroud.
"The rookie QB has proven well ahead of schedule in his confidence, poise and mechanics," CBS Sports writes. "Now, with DeMeco Ryans capable of getting the most out of just about any defense, it's time to surround him with Grade-A weaponry for a legitimate postseason push. Start with a big-time wideout to pair with Nico Collins and Tank Dell."
The Texans are projected to have almost $74 million in cap space going into the offseason, the fifth-most in the league, so they can afford just about anyone they want.
If getting another receiver is the goal, then the prize of free agency is none other than Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Mike Evans. Evans, who has had at least 1,000 yards in each of his 10 NFL seasons, is from Galveston, Texas, which is less than an hour away from Houston. If the Texans pony up the money, maybe Evans would be interested in a homecoming and forming one of the league's best receiver trios.
Texans Rookie Duo Could Make History
If that doesn't work, then there are plenty of other options as well. Some other notable receivers set to hit free agency include Cincinnati Bengals star Tee Higgins and Indianapolis Colts top wideout Michael Pittman Jr. Whether or not any of these players actually make it to the market is another story, but the bottom line is that the Texans' will have no shortage of options if they want to add another weapon.
For now, though, the Texans' focus remains on winning their final two games and potentially clinching a playoff berth.
