How New Texans Offense Could Be Similar to Kyle Shanahan's 49ers

Ahead of their first season under coach DeMeco Ryans, the Texans are looking a lot different, especially on offense, which has garnered comparisons that may lead to success rather quickly.
In this story:

The NFL OTA's are officially underway, meaning the Houston Texans are one step closer to the start of their 2023-24 campaign and the beginning of what could be a new era.

Building a winning roster started with the coaches, adding a new offensive and defensive coordinator to serve alongside rookie coach DeMeco Ryans, but from there, the players seemed to relish the idea of playing under Ryans and his staff.

The Texans have added several key pieces to their team, since the beginning of the offseason, and even without having played a game yet, the positive change has been apparent to anyone paying attention, especially Houston's own players.

"It's a great place to play football," Texans quarterback Case Keenum said. "You can feel the excitement [around] DeMeco Ryans ... You can feel that little pulse coming back."

With that said, what could Ryans and offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik's offense look like next season?

Considering Slowik comes from the Kyle Shanahan tree, it is easy to see how a comparison between his 49ers and his current Texans could be made.

Under him, the 49ers earned their way to the Super Bowl with an offense led by a rookie, Brock Purdy. But while the 49ers didn't make it over the hump, they had numerous offensive difference-makers to get them through the postseason.

San Francisco relied heavily on its running back, Raheem Mostert, as well as a trio of Purdy, George Kittle and Deebo Samuel. All four players brought the 49ers success and worked well together, setting a precedent for what Houston is attempting to do this season.

Adding receiver Robert Woods was a great start, giving Houston veteran leadership from a player with Super Bowl experience in LA. A combination of Woods, Dell and Metchie could make up the kind of production that Samuel brought San Francisco.

But what about the others?

Dalton Schultz, the recently signed ex-Cowboy, brings a strong level of talent as a reliable tight end, while Dameon Pierce — the reining Angry Runner of the Year — and Devin Singletary pack a one-two punch in the backfield.

All of those playmakers will help make rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud's job easier next season, as he is set to lead the offense in the way that Garoppolo did, especially as he begins to adjust to the faster-paced NFL next season.

Overall, each core group of Houston's offense is set with weapons that are all looking to win games for the Texans. The 49ers nearly won it all in 2020, and while a Super Bowl run may not be in the cards for Houston next season, it certainly is off to a strong start to getting back into AFC contention, which is all Texans fans can hope for.
