Texans Tease 'The Other Color' With New Uniforms
Since they entered the league as an expansion franchise in 2002, the Houston Texans haven't done much in the way of adjusting their look.
That will change in 2024, when the Texans plan to unveil a new uniform set.
Interestingly, Hannah McNair -- wife of CEO Cal McNair -- teased the possibility of another color entering the uniform mix for Houston as part of this refresh.
"You'll have your blue, your white and, you know, the other," McNair said, according to Matt Young of The Houston Chronicle.
Right now, "the other" for the Texans is what they call "battle red.'' In 2003, the Texans introduced a red alternate top. With the elimination of the NFL's controversial "one-helmet" rule, the Texans were able to create a matching battle red helmet for the 2022 campaign. The red uniform/helmet combination was worn once last season, a Thursday Night Football loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 9.
While some believe the matching red helmets are a bit overkill, the Texans red alternate tops have generally received strong reviews. It would be hard to imagine -- especially after all the work that went into creating the matching alternate helmet -- that red won't be part of the mix for the Texans beginning in 2024.
Of course, there's natural speculation that McNair was alluding to "columbia blue" returning to Houston. But as pointed out in the Chronicle article, that's complicated by the fact that the Oilers left Houston and eventually became the Titans. Bud Adams was the owner of the franchise when they left Houston for Tennessee in 1997. His daughter -- Amy Adams Strunk -- still presides over the Titans. Would she be willing to give up the iconic Oilers branding so it could return to Houston?
The fact that the Titans plan to wear Oilers uniforms as a throwback during the 2023 season would suggest not.
