Titans To Wear Oilers Throwback Uniforms vs. Texans
Earlier this week, the Tennessee Titans revealed the Oilers throwback uniforms that they will be wearing twice this season, brining back one of the most iconic looks in NFL history:
Thursday, the Titans announced the two games they will wear the throwback uniforms for this season, the second of which figures to be very controversial.
The first of two occasions will come when the Titans host the Atlanta Falcons in a Week 8 matchup on Oct. 29. This will mark the first time that the Oilers uniforms have been worn in a game since the 1998 season. The second will be on Dec. 17, when the division-rival Houston Texans come to town.
Of course, the Oilers called Houston home from 1960-1996, before relocating to Nashville. While they initially kept the name Oilers for their first two seasons in Tennessee, they rebranded as the Titans in 1998. So technically, the Oilers history does belong to the Titans franchise. Amy Adams Strunk owns the Titans currently, and her father, Buzz Adams, founded the Oilers franchise and eventually moved them away from Houston.
So it's natural that Houston football fans -- who got a team back in 2002 when the Texans joined the league as an expansion franchise -- would feel upset about seeing the Titans wear a uniform that primarily represented the city of Houston. But to wear the uniforms directly against the Texans feels like an unnecessary slap in the face.
