Texans Trade for Commanders DE Chase Young? How It Can Happen
The Houston Texans are rebuilding their defense with new head coach DeMeco Ryans and defensive coordinator Matt Burke, and the team could use a few more additions to make it more complete.
The pass rush is arguably the biggest fixing point, and drafting Will Anderson should help with that, but the team could use another pass rusher.
Bleacher Report has listed out numerous trade scenarios for Washington Commanders defensive end Chase Young, including one that has him going to the Texans for Jonathan Greenard and a 2024 third-round pick.
"In a rebuild, the Texans may finish with a record well below .500," Bleacher Report writes. "So, the Commanders would likely add a top-75 pick for next year's draft, and they would get a 26-year-old defensive end who led Houston with eight sacks for the 2021 campaign."
Young has dealt with injuries, but we would argue that at price, the Texans can afford to take a risk on trading for him.
Since winning Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2020 in 15 starts, Young has played in just 12 games due to injury. Even so, his career includes nine sacks and three fumble recoveries over 27 games.
The Commanders declined Young's fifth-year option earlier this offseason, meaning he has just one year left on his deal. Greenard is also a free agent after this season, which explains why he would be available in return. Should the trade be made and if it works out, the Texans could have a prime pass rusher to help build the defense. If not, Houston can cut ties after 2023 and start fresh.
The biggest obstacle here? If Washington really does choose to listen to proposals, there's a chance at a bidding war of sorts? Does an expiring contract and a third-round pick get it done? There are reasons for the Houston Texans to at least explore to find that answer.
