Choices to Make for Next Titans Coach: Come March, Here Are Tennessee's 24 Free Agents
NASHVILLE — Tennessee Titans general manager Ran Carthon, owner Amy Adams Strunk, and the Titans' future coach face several decisions starting March 13, when free agency begins.
Carthon on Jan. 9 said the door is still open for Derrick Henry to re-sign with the Titans. Henry made his fourth Pro Bowl this season and has virtually all of his career as the centerpiece of the Titans offense.
Henry turned 30 at the end of the season — a red flag for regression with running backs. But Henry still rushed for more than 1,000 yards.
"Yeah, that'll be the new head coach and I having a conversation," Carthon said a week ago. " I had a really good conversation with Derrick (Henry) yesterday on the way out. We had our conversation, which I'll keep between he and I, but the door's never closed."
Henry is one of Tennessee's 24 free agents. The Titans have three exclusive rights free agents — running back Julius Chestnut, defensive end TK McClendon, and linebacker Jack Gibbens. EFRAs have less than three years accrued in the NFL and an expiring contract. If the Titans offer an EFRA a one-year contract at the league minimum (based on his credited seasons), he can't negotiate with other teams.
Tackle Calvin Throckmorton and cornerback Chris Williamson are restricted free agents. While they are free to negotiate and sign with any team, the Titans have the option to offer them a qualifying offer ("tender"). These tenders come with the right of first refusal and/or draft-pick compensation.
Let's take a look at the Titans free agents.
