New Titans Defenders Showing Early Leadership
NASHVILLE - When it comes to leadership for the Tennessee Titans defense, coordinator Shane Bowen is happy with what he has seen from his newest defenders.
Bowen spoke with the media on Wednesday before the Titans minicamp practice session, where the leadership on the defensive side of the football was the subject of conversation.
"I think all the additions we've signed in free agency have shown up differently throughout this offseason," said Bowen. "Azeez (Al-Shaair), he's the ultimate pro. Every single day he comes into work, he talks to other guys, he coaches other guys, (and) he asks really good questions on what's going on with us schematically."
"I think you feel Arden (Key) out there, like, you feel his ability to rush and to affect the quarterback like it's noticeable, and it's big," continued Bowen. "It's been noticeable here throughout these OTAs. Hopefully, that continues."
"Then obviously with Sean (Murphy-Bunting), it's just his size, his speed, and all the elements," concluded Bowen. "He's challenging, and he's competing, so all that stuff's been good. I'm pleased with all those guys."
While the defense was the strength of this team last season and is once again being counted on to lead this team in 2023, these new players are bringing more talent, leadership, and, hopefully, play on the field to the Titans.
So far, through the open dates of OTAs, and minicamp, the speed and fallout hustle of Al-Shaair, the pass-rushing ability of Key, and the coverage skills of Murphy-Bunting, as Bowen said, have been easy to recognize.
Of course, these things only matter if they are translated to the field on game day. Still, at least to this point in the process, these three players are doing exactly what they were signed as free agents to do, provide leadership and play for a defense looking to improve again this season.
