Tennessee Titans 3 Keys to Victory Against Baltimore Ravens in Week 6
The Tennessee Titans head to London, England to take on the Baltimore Ravens in Week 6. The Ravens present a tough challenge and a similar threat as the Indianapolis Colts did in Week 5. If the Titans expect a different result, they will need to perform better in some key areas.
Run Defense
The Titans gave up 193 yards on the ground to the Colts last week. They had talented rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson for only half of the game and the rest of the way had backup Gardner Minshew. With all due respect to Richardson and Minshew, they aren't former MVP Lamar Jackson.
Mike Vrabel talked about the challenge of facing the Ravens' run game at practice earlier this week and if the Titans plan to win this game, they will need to get back to form as one of the top run defenses in the NFL.
They could get some major help in the form of defensive tackle Teair Tart, if Tart is able to return after missing last week with a toe injury. Tart made the trip to London with the team making it possible he could play, but is questionable going into Sunday.
Strike Zone Scoring
Everyone knows the term "red zone." We track the success of teams in that 20-yard range more than any other area of the field, but one area of the field the Titans need to focus on this week is a range some know as the "strike zone."
The "strike zone" is a 20-yard space between the 40 and the red zone. There is increased space because of the additional 20 yards, but you are still close enough to the end zone to be able to get a score on a good completion.
This makes it a prime spot for offenses to take a shot deep on a long pass or on a trick play. That is exactly what the Titans need to focus on. The Ravens' red zone defense is the stingiest in the NFL, allowing touchdowns to their opponent on only 25% of their red zone opportunities.
The Titans are bottom-three in the NFL in red zone offense currently. Scoring touchdowns on only 6 of their 17 opportunities. The Titans need to hope they improve on red zone offense throughout the season, but this week may not be the right week to hope for that turnaround. Taking shots from the strike zone to get touchdowns should be the plan.
Win Turnover Battle
The Baltimore Ravens are 3-2 on the season. In their two losses, they lost the turnover battle 5-1. The truth here is, the Ravens are a better team than the Titans on paper with an excellent defense that's near the top of the league in sacks and an offense led by a former MVP who is performing fantastic despite the record.
If the Titans expect to win, they need to give their offense some help with shorter fields and by putting them in the "strike zone" right away. The Titans' defense is 23rd in the NFL in turnovers forced through five weeks, that simply isn't good enough from a team that preached turnovers all offseason.
There may be a chance for the Titans if they simply tie the turnover battle, but that would be playing with fire. Losing is certain death. It would be best for the Titans to not take chances and win the turnover battle on Sunday so they give themselves a legitimate opportunity at victory.
