Small School Standout Caleb Murphy Looking To Make His Mark With The Titans

Caleb Murphy's stats were almost unbelievable last season, and now he looks to turn his talents into a place with the Tennessee Titans.

NASHVILLE - It's almost inconceivable that anyone could ever manage 25.5 quarterback sacks in a single high school, college, or NFL season, but that's precisely what new Tennessee Titans undrafted rookie rusher Caleb Murphy did during the 2022 season at Ferris State University where he helped lead the Bulldogs to their second consecutive D-II national title.

However, Murphy's incredible season isn't the top all-time number. That belongs to Derrick Thomas, who recorded 27 sacks in 1988, though the NCAA didn't begin recording sacks as a stat until 2000.

The NCAA's official record book regards Arizona State's Terrell Suggs as the FBS-level record holder with 24 sacks in 2002. Worchester State's Russ Watson tied Suggs with 24 sacks at the Division III level in 2000.

During his two seasons with the Bulldogs, Murphy terrorized opposing quarterbacks for an incredible 40 sacks and 60.5 tackles for loss. He was the definition of a game-wrecker.

While Murphy now holds this distinction all by himself- since Thomas' mark isn't recognized- the hope from the Titans and their fans is that he can begin translating some of that pass rush at the NFL level.

While his RAS score (5.78) is less than ideal, his athletic test numbers at the combine show reason for optimism that with some time in an NFL strength program, and some coaching to improve his technique, Murphy could become a solid NFL player.

Standing 6-foot-3, 254 pounds, Murphy posted a 4.81 forty, though his game film seems faster, a 28.5" vertical, and a 9'11" broad jump.

Murphy is a high-motor player with enough skill and power to dominate D-II. However, that's a big concern entering the NFL. It won't be as easy now without hard work and physical improvement.

Still, he is an intriguing player and someone to pay attention to as he enters the upcoming rookie minicamp and training camp.

Though his ceiling for this season is likely the practice squad, this project player could pay off for the Titans, who have consistently stuck with some of their project players for long periods in the coming seasons.
