Razorbacks Declared One of Winners for 2024 Schedule ... Really
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — For a couple of days now, a 2024 football schedule is dominating the talk everywhere in the SEC. For a change, most of the conversation in Arkansas has been positive because usually folks feel the league hunts new ways to keep twisting the screws.
As it always really is, the problem for the Razorbacks isn't how many people are in the stands, but managing to win the games. They've done that a few times, most notably in 2021 winning nine games that included a win over Texas, but now they're going to have to do it again.
First they've got 2023 to get out of the way before anybody can really think about that. With a ton of new faces on the roster, the Razorbacks are hanging their hat on a proven quarterback and running backs, and a good linebacker, but a lot of questions hanging out there. That's not a negative because the answer could be a team of all-league players, but there's absolutely no evidence about what they can do in an SEC season.
Alabama is on that schedule next year, a team Arkansas hasn't beaten since 2006. In other words, they've never beaten Nick Saban with the Crimson Tide. Being the fourth of a five-game stretch of league games (and on the road), there were no favors handed out in this year's schedule.
Everybody is picking winners and losers for the 2024 schedule. The problem with that is nobody knows who's going to be any good that year. With all the ways rosters can change, it's impossible to predict with any certainty. Speculate all you want about incoming freshman, but they may be long gone by then with the modern transfer portal era in full swing.
All of it's a double-edged sword. Teams can improve by adding players that fit in immediately, or ones that leave. The Hogs had a flurry of folks leaving town after the Liberty Bowl win over Kansas that continued though spring practice.
The fans are another story completely. Guessing what happens there is pretty simple because a lot of them absolutely hate the Longhorns. Just mention them by name and people start jumping up and down. Despite Arkansas being 7-5 against the Longhorns since 1986, including 5-2 against Texas since 1991, Razorback fans love to pretend they are in underdog role. As for the coaches, they just want to still be at the school they're currently at now by 2024.
