Jeremiah Davenport Commits to Hogs for Another Shooter
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — It's starting to become clear Arkansas coach Eric Musselman wants more scorers.
Thursday he added another one with the announcement of under the radar Cincinnati transfer Jeremiah Davenport.
This one apparently came without much expectation from the guys who follow this all the time and, doing the math, the quick assumption is that somebody on the roster now for the Hogs is going to be leaving.
All that means it won't be too surprising to see another announcement with another Razorback bouncing out, but there's some guessing left to do on that one.
Here's our breakdown of Davenport from Kent Smith:
Davenport is a sixth man-type player. He's going to come off the bench for an offensive spark and usually get you 8-12 points in limited minutes. About every fifth game he is going to put up 18-22 while still not eating up a ton of starter minutes.
It's easy to see why Musselman wanted to add his game to next season's recipe. Davenport is at his best when he can catch and shoot.
The Razorbacks are going to attack the basket hard next season, so having a guy Derrian Ford or Trevon Brazile can kick out to for a quick basket to break up the zone will be of tremendous help. Also, if he can Joseph Pinion ever get on the floor at the same time, the points from the outside could add up rather quickly, which is something the Hogs were missing this season.
Davenport is also really good at the pick-and-pop game. He can catch and shoot after a screen with little time required to either create space or get the shot off. He also has good size that will hold up in the SEC. It also allows him to get solid positioning down low for rebounds.
He is a 6-foot-7, 215-pound guard who shoots primarily three-pointers, but hits those at a 35% clip and averaged 9.1 points and 4.2 rebounds per game with the Bearcats.
He scored a season-high 22 points on six made triples in a win at Wichita State on Jan. 5 and went for 20 points on 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc against Tulsa on Feb. 1. He posted double-figure scoring games 13 times on the year.
