Window for Razorbacks' 2024 Schedule Now Open
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — We have no idea what Arkansas' football schedule will be for 2024, but we do have a preliminary idea of at least a few opponents, and it is expected the SEC meetings that start Tuesday in Destin, Fla., may reveal it all.
While a report from Brandon Marcello at 247Sports on Friday had the Razorbacks favoring an eight-game league schedule while the majority from a preliminary vote was joined only by Mississippi State, Kentucky and South Carolina. Alabama was in favor of nine games until Nick Saban pitched a fit over earlier reports their expected three permanent opponents of Auburn, Tennessee and LSU.
The Hogs' three, according to the earlier report, was Texas, Missouri and Ole Miss. No real reason to get all worked up until the thing is done. Greg Sankey's sales ability may have been busy lately because only the league members as a whole can vote on issues like this. Texas and Oklahoma will be in attendance, but not voting until after they are officially members next summer. Both have said they are in favor of nine conference games.
Considering there are 14 members and the league going to 16, the SEC is going to have to split Texas and Oklahoma into the East and West, which makes no logical sense whatsoever. It's an opportunity for the SEC to organize things a little better with the Longhorns and Sooners joining and speculation keeps putting Auburn and Alabama to the East and Missouri going to the West. The guess is Saban would REALLY not like having to play Georgia and Florida every year in addition to Tennessee.
Logically, though, common sense tells us that nothing stays the same with teams. They go up and down and some are always going to be up and down. I see no expectation that history is going to suddenly change in the sport considering it hasn't in about 100 years. Everybody has a few years their fans would just as soon forget. Even at Alabama.
If the reports are accurate about eight conference games and keeping two divisions with some changes and the Hogs are in favor of that, Hogs athletics director Hunter Yurachek has to be playing the political game along with Sankey.
But we are in the window for that schedule for 2024 to be announced if they want to get it done at the spring meetings. There are already enough issues for everybody to discuss in Nashville at SEC Media Days in July. No telling what's going to come out from 14 coaches and athletics directors parading through with a horde of media folks. That's going to be a circus that will be televised.
But that means the spring meetings next week are going to be in the spotlight more than normal because that's when Sankey has said he wanted to have the whole football structure settled at this time with a vote.
Guessing what the league will do is a political game going on away from the cameras and microphones. But stay tuned because we might actually hear something (leaks or otherwise) before Tuesday ... we do have a long weekend and a Memorial Day holiday for all this.
