Report: Luke Fickell Staying at Cincinnati Following This Season
CINCINNATI — Luke Fickell isn't going anywhere according to one college football insider. CBS Sports writer Dennis Dodd reported the news on Wednesday
Rumors lumped Fickell in as a hot candidate for open jobs at LSU and USC, but that's not happening in Dodd's eyes. The Bearcats's head coach has noted that he wants to raise his family in the midwest. UC fans are weary about USC, in particular, because Trojans' athletic director Mike Bohn hired Fickell to coach at Cincinnati.
What a hire that turned out to be. The Bearcats are No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings for the first time ever and Fickell sports a 46-14 record as head coach. His 46 victories and 76.7% win rate is second in Bearcats' history among coaches to last more than one season (Brian Kelly, 34-6, 85%).
Should Fickell stay true to Dodd's report, he should pass Rich Minter in wins sometime next year—barring a program collapse. Minter (53-63) coached for 10 seasons and is the longest-tenured coach in program history. At this rate, UC would love to see Fickell triple that coaching timeline.
The Bearcats travel to Greenville, North Carolina, this week for a Black Friday showdown with ECU. The kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
