Georgia Tech Loses 9-3 in Game Three Against Louisville

Georgia Tech loses its first ACC series of the season

After getting a win and evening up the series yesterday, Georgia Tech was taking on Louisville in game three today and looking to win their second straight ACC series.

Georgia Tech got a good performance on the mound yesterday from pitcher Luke Schmolke and they were hoping for a similar performance today from Jackson Finley, who got the start and hit sixth today. Finley has been Georgia Tech's most consistent pitcher this season and the Yellow Jackets were hoping to take the series from one of the ACC's top teams today.

Here was the starting lineup for the Yellow Jackets against the Cardinals today:

1. CF- Jake DeLeo

2. 1B- Angelo Dispigna

3. 3B- Drew Compton

4. C- Jack Rubenstein

5. RF- Stephen Reid

6. P- Jackson Finley

7. IF-Kristian Campbell

8. 2B- Nicholas Romano

9. SS- Jadyn Jackson

Georgia Tech got off to a nice start with a DeLeo single and then Dispigna reached on an error to give Georgia Tech two runners on with no outs. They did not do anything with that advantage however and that left Louisville with a chance to strike in the bottom of the first and that is what they did.

Finley gave up a leadoff walk to Christian Knapczyk and the he proceeded to steal two bases to get to third. JT Benson brought in Knapczyk courtesy of an RBI double to give the Cardinals and early 1-0 lead, but the inning ended after Benson was caught trying to steal third. Finley escaped the first inning giving up only one run and striking out two batters.

It was an uneventful top of the 2nd inning for Georgia Tech and they were held scoreless.

Back-to-back singles put runners on the corners with one out for the Cardinals and a sac fly from Logan Beard gave them a 2-0 lead. Finley held them to just one run again, but GT found themselves in a hole early.

After another hitless inning in the 3rd, Georgia Tech had started the game 1-11 and did not have a hit since DeLeo's leadoff single in the first.

Finley had his first scoreless inning of the game in the bottom of the 3rd.

After three quiet innings, Georgia Tech's bats went to work.

After a flyout from Rubenstein, Reid walked and then scored due to an RBI double from Finley and Georgia Tech had its first run on the board. They kept things going with an RBI single from Campbell, who to second on a bad throw, and just like that, the game was tied 2-2. Romano would single to put runners on the corners and then a sac fly from Jackson gave Georgia Tech its first lead of the game 3-2. DeLeo would get to first on a bunt, but Dispigna struck out to end the inning.

The lead did not last long, however.

After a flyout, Finley hit Eddie King Jr with a pitch and then King Jr stole second to put him in scoring position. Isaac Humphrey struck out and it looked like Finley was going to get a scoreless inning, but an RBI single from Beard tied the game 3-3. Then, an RBI single from Beard gave the Cardinals the lead back 4-3.

After the Yellow Jackets' offense was held to zero runs in the fifth, Finley came back out for the bottom of the fifth. Payton singled and stole second and McCoy singled to put runners on the corners with no outs and Finley's day on the mound was done. Jackson Vaughan came in and got a strikeout, but then gave up a sac fly to put Louisville up 5-3. Vaughan got out of the inning only down two runs, but the offense was going to have to get going again to get out of this deficit.

Campbell would reach base on a walk, but the offense could not get a hit and had their second straight scoreless inning.

Vaughan came back for the 6th and got a quick out to start things off, but a solo home run for Beard extended the lead to 6-3.

It was not pretty the rest of the way for Georgia Tech.

Louisville tacked three more runs in the game and won 9-3.

Georgia Tech will be back in action on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. They will be at home against Wofford.
