Georgia Tech Softball Drops Both Games of Doubleheader vs Virginia Tech

Georgia Tech is now 15-12 after the losses to the Hokies

Georgia Tech Softball has won seven of their last eight heading into their double-header with Virginia Tech and the Yellow Jackets were looking to win the series today and improve their ACC record to 4-1.

The day did not start well for the Yellow Jackets in game one though.

Chandler Dennis got the start for Georgia Tech in game one.

Virginia Tech got a leadoff walk to start the game and the after Dennis got two early strikeouts, an RBI double from the Hokies gave them an early 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless first inning from Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech got right back to work. The Hokies got another leadoff walk and after a strikeout, they got a steal and another walk to give them runners on first and second with just one out. Dennis got a strikeout and it looked like she might escape without allowing a run, but the Hokies got some two-out hits that proved to be the difference in the game.

A 2-RBI double pushed the lead to 3-0 and then a two-run homer made it 5-0. Sophia Voyles came in to replace Dennis after that and she recorded the last out.

GT got a leadoff single from Mallorie Black, but that was it in the second inning.

After a scoreless third inning and fourth inning for VT, the Yellow Jackets got on the board courtesy of a home run for Sara Beth Allen.

Voyles continued her great day and held the Hokies scoreless again in the 5th.

After a leadoff double from Ella Edgmon, Emma Kauf had an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-2. They could not pull any closer and the game went to the 6th.

VT got two singles to start the inning and because of a bad throw, they got to second and third to put themselves in scoring position. GT got two outs and it looked like they were going to get out of it, but a walk loaded the bases, and a 2-RBI double followed it to make it 7-2.

Kinsey Norton would come out to pitch the 7th inning and she did not give up any runs.

Georgia Tech would have to put up at least five runs in the 7th to continue the game and they got two, but not five, and VT won the first matchup 7-4.

Game Two

Blake Neleman got the start in game two for the Yellow Jackets.

Both pitchers started the game off well and neither team was able to score in the first two innings.

The Hokies got on the board first in the 3rd inning. An RBI single put VT up 1-0, but Neleman got two strikeouts to end the inning and GT was only down one run.

Georgia Tech could not score in the third inning and that gave Virginia Tech an opportunity to extend the lead and they did. A leadoff homerun made it a 2-0 game, but it was still manageable if the offense could get going.

After neither team scored in the fifth, Virginia Tech took control of the game in the sixth with three solo home runs to make it 5-0.

Georgia Tech did respond though at the bottom of the 6th with their first runs of the game. A 2-RBI single from Allen got the Yellow Jackets closer by making it 5-2, but they still went to the last inning trailing by three runs.

Virginia Tech slammed the door shut on any potential comeback in the top of the 7th though. Another home run was given up by Georgia Tech and it was a three-run homer to make it 8-2 Virginia Tech.

Georgia Tech did not score in the 7th and the Hokies took game two.

Game three will be tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
