Georgia Tech's Offense scores 16 Runs In Route Of Clemson
It was a dominant day behind the plate for the Yellow Jackets.
Georgia Tech put up 19 hits and 16 runs on the Tigers, went 11-24 with runners on base, and 7-19 with runners in scoring position. The game was never in doubt and it was the best the bats have looked in a few weeks.
After having a walk-off victory over the Clemson Tigers last night, Georgia Tech was back in action this afternoon as they looked to clinch the series.
It was an offensive struggle for most of the game yesterday, but Angelo Dispigna found a way to break through for the Yellow Jackets with the game-tying RBI and then a couple of innings later, the game-winning RBI.
Today, Luke Schmolke was on the mound as the starter for Georgia Tech as they look to win game two, and here is the lineup that Tech was utilizing:
1. CF- Jake DeLeo
2. 2B- Kristian Campbell
3. RF- Stephen Reid
4. IF- Angelo Dispigna
5. 1B- Jackson Finley
6. 3B- Drew Compton
7. DH- Jack Rubenstein
8. SS- Jadyn Jackson
9. C- Tyler Minnick
Schmolke made quick work of Clemson at the top of the 1st and the GT offense wasted no time in getting on the board today.
DeLeo started things off with a leadoff home run to give Georgia Tech a 1-0 lead.
Reid and Finley would walk and Dispigna got a single to load the bases for Tech. Compton (who has been struggling at the plate) came through with a huge 2-RBI single to make it 3-0 in just the 1st inning. The offense kept rolling though and Rubenstein had an RBI double to make it 4-0 and just like that, GT already scored as many runs as they did in 11 innings yesterday.
A wild pitch allowed one more run to score in the first before Jackson and Minnick struck out to end it. Still, it could not have started any better for the Yellow Jackets.
Schmolke had his first hiccup of the game in the 2nd, giving up a solo home run, but he did not allow any more.
The offense for the Yellow Jackets went right back to working in the 2nd. Campbell walked and then Clemson changed pitchers for the first time, but that did not matter. Reid singled and then Dispigna walked to load the bases and then a sac fly from Finley made it 6-1 and the game was back to a five-run lead for GT heading to the 3rd.
Schmolke had a tough third inning though and it seemed like Clemson was about to have a huge inning. After a quick out, Schmolke walked a batter and then gave up a two-run home run to cut the lead to 6-3. Clemson got more on base, but he survived the inning, however, the lead was cut into.
Georgia Tech's offense was still relentless in the third.
Rubenstein started things off with a solo home run to make it 7-3 and then Jackson singled to get another runner on base. Minnick had a sac bunt to move Jackson to 2nd and the DeLeo hit his second home run of the day to make it 9-3 and force another pitching change for the Tigers.
Nine runs through three innings was incredible and it gave Schmolke more breathing room to come back for the fourth.
Schmolke breezed through the fourth and gave way to the Yellow Jackets offense at the bottom of the inning.
After Dispigna struck out to start the inning, Finley singled and Compton walked to give GT two baserunners. Rubenstein flew out and it looked like Tech was not going to get any more runs on the board, but an RBI single from Jackson made it 10-3 and gave Tech double-digit runs for the first time since game two against Louisville last weekend.
A leadoff walk gave Clemson a base runner, but Schhmolke got through the next three batters quickly.
Tech continued to pour on the runs in the 5th. DeLeo continued his great day with a leadoff double and then he got to third on a passed ball. Campbell drove him in with an RBI double to make it 11-3. Reid was hit by a pitch and Compton blasted another home run to give Tech a 14-3 lead. It was a fantastic day for the offense all around and hopefully, that can continue in the coming games.
Aeden Finateri replaced Schmolke in the 6th. In five innings, Schmolke allowed three runs on six hits and struck out five batters.
It was a wrap from that point forward. Tech got to 16 runs and let the young guys get some experience.
It was a dominant showing from GT and they will look for the sweep tomorrow afternoon.
Game three is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
