Jackets Cruise to Big Win Against Georgia State, 23-8

Georgia Tech looked absolutely dominant against the Panthers at home.

Coming off a sweep by Virginia Tech, the Jackets really needed a get-right game. On paper, the Panthers are a team that gives them a chance to do so. However, with their struggles against a comparable opponent like Virginia Tech, it's hard to be completely confident in Tech's chances to take care of business at home.

The starting lineup for today:

Ben King got the start for the Jackets on the mound today. In a change, starting right fielder Stephen Reid was moved to the DH spot. Sophomore Jett Lovett, who appeared in 10 games last year and has taken 14 AB this year. On the season, he sports a .286/.474/.357 line with a .831 OPS.

In the first inning, King came out strong. He retired the first three hitters he faced and looked really comfortable. For Tech, the order came out flat in the first, but they were making contact. Campbell struck out - DeLeo and Reid both hit groundouts.

King looked less strong in the second. He stayed clean, but the Georgia State bats started to make contact. They hit a single and loaded the bases on some bad walks, but the defense tightened up and got a crucial flyout to end the inning,

Jackson Finley got it going in the bottom of the second with a walk. Gielser and Lovett then both walked to load the bases, but Jadyn Jackson grounded into the double play to end the inning.

The pitching continued to look strong through three innings. Camren Hill went 1-2-3 again and the GT bats fed off of it. Kristian Campbell, who has been on a twenty-game hit streak, continued his streak with a huge homer.

Hill had another great inning, retiring 3 straight batters yet again. While the pitching has really struggled the whole year, it was nice to see a good performance today.

The bats continued to stay hot. Angelo Dispigna walked and then got scored by Jackson Finley on a monster home run slam.

Lovett, Jackson and Tyler Minnick all recorded doubles in their appearances to keep the runners moving around the base paths. Although DeLeo grounded out into the second double play of the night, the Jackets racked up four runs in the inning.

Demetri Diamant relieved Hill, but wasn't quite able to replicate his performance. The Panthers immediately singled in back-to-back PAs and then homered to score all three runs. Cody Carwile then came in to close the inning and was able to do so. He got a quick strikeout and the next batter lined into a double play to close out a sloppy inning for the Jackets.

Dispigna opened up the inning with a single and then got to second after the pitch got away from Georgia State pitcher Brooks Gorman. Jackson Finley continued his great night with a single to score Dispigna yet again and got home himself. This was a really shaky inning for Gorman - both Finley and Giesler were able to steal bases and the Jackets were able to add another two runs to their lead.

Carwile then gave up a homer to the Panthers at the top of the sixth, but was able to get two strikeouts to prevent any further scoring. Ultimately, the home run he gave up proved inconsequential due to the offense Tech was able to generate.

Although DeLeo continued to struggle at the plate, the rest of the lineup was fantastic in the sixth. Kristian Campbell got hit on a wild pitch and sent home on another wild pitch that Stephen Reid stole second on. Jackson Finley - who continued to absolutely rake - smacked another double to score Reid. However, it was Jadyn Jackson who really punctuated the inning. His 2-RBI double set the Jackets run total for the inning at five and closed out a fantastic inning of Jackets baseball.

Carwile kept it going on the mound, recording three straight K's to keep the score at 12-4, Tech.

With the game in hand, coach Danny Hall started putting in backups, but still left a few of the starters in. It didn't make much of a difference - Angelo Dispigna hit a huge home run to add even more cushion to the lead.

Reid, Brant Baughcum and Dispigna all scored following the Dispigna homer in their second five-run inning. At this point, Tech held a 17-4 lead.

Even though Georgia State added another two runs, Tech still put up another six runs with the backups in - their third consecutive inning of 5+ runs - and ran it up to 23-6.

The Panthers added another two runs in the top of the ninth to end it at 23-8.

It's nice to see the Jackets back in the win column, especially in such a big way. They took care of business and look to stay winning against Miami in their away series.
