Georgia Tech Beats Notre Dame At The Buzzer 70-68 To Pick Up Second ACC Win
The losing streak is finally over for Georgia Tech basketball.
There were times when it looked like the Yellow Jackets were going to fold much like the last time that Georgia Tech faced Notre Dame, but Lance Terry beat the buzzer and got the second ACC win of the season for Georgia Tech.
This was a close game with some up and downs, but Georgia Tech found a way to win in the end.
Let's recap tonight's action in Atlanta.
For about the first seven minutes or so, these two teams went back and forth and Georgia Tech led 11-8. Neither team shot well from three early on either. Terry not only hit the buzzer-beating shot, but he started 3-4 and had seven early points.
With around seven minutes left in the first half, Georgia Tech led 24-20, but Notre Dame responded with a big 7-0 run to take the lead 27-24. Sturdivant and Terry hit back-to-back threes to retake the lead 30-27. Notre Dame hit a pair of free throws to cut it to a one-point game, but Georgia Tech went on a 6-0 run and got their biggest lead of the first half 36-29.
That only lasted about 30 seconds.
Notre Dame hit two quick threes and got the lead down to one point. Each team hit another bucket before the buzzer and Georgia Tech led 38-37.
Here were the halftime stats.
The stats were as close as the game suggested. No team really had a big advantage in one category and Georgia Tech was going to have to finish this game, unlike the previous matchup with the Fighting Irish.
Notre Dame grabbed the lead after a quick 9-5 run in the first five and a half minutes. Halfway through the second half, Georgia Tech led 54-50, but Notre Dame quickly put together a 10-0 run to earn a six-point lead of 60-54. Georgia Tech was able to cut into that lead, but Notre Dame kept hitting shots to retain the lead.
Notre Dame led the game 64-60 with 5:50 to go and that is when Georgia Tech went on their most critical run of the game. An 8-0 run from the Yellow Jackets got the lead back and Georgia Tech led 68-64 with 2:58 left. Notre Dame hit a layup and then a pair of free throws to tie the game at 68-68 with 1:58 left.
Then neither team wanted to score.
Both teams went on scoring droughts and both teams had chances to take the game over.
Georgia Tech got the ball back with five seconds left and this happened.
Here are the final stats from tonight's win.
Terry led the way with 19 points, but there were three others in double digits. Sturdivant (12), Coleman (11), and Franklin (16) also had nice games.
Although this does not solve all of the issues wrong with the team and program overall, this was a nice win for head coach Josh Pastner and the Yellow Jackets.
Georgia Tech will be back on the road this Saturday against Wake Forest. The game will tip off at 5:00 p.m.
