Georgia Tech signs Florida Transfer Kowacie Reeves

Tech basketball adds a key offensive weapon in Reeves with one of Stoudamire's first recruits

Georgia Tech announced they have signed guard Kowacie Reeves out of the transfer portal. The 6’6’ player has two years of eligibility left and a strong chance of becoming an immediate starter. The Georgia native spent his first two years at Florida where he started 17 games and played in 60, averaging 15.5 minutes and 19.3 minutes each year. Reeves averaged 7.1 points, 37.7% from the field, and 29.2% from three over the two seasons. He improved his rebound average sophomore year, grabbing 2.6 rebounds a game and also had 0.5 steals a game.

Reeves came out of high school as a Rivals 5-star recruit and ESPN and 247 4-star recruit. He was the No. 6 shooting guard according to Rivals and 247, while also being top 30 overall. In high school, he averaged 27.0 PPG and 9.9 rebounds per game and was a nominee for McDonald’s All-American and Gatorade Player of the Year.

During his time at Florida, Reeves had a career-high 21-point game against Texas A&M his freshman year during the NIT tournament, and this past season, he had a season-high game of 20 points against Ohio University. He seemed to struggle with shooting this past season, especially from the 3-PT line as his percentage dropped from 33% to 26.2%. His struggles this past season may have been a big contributor in transferring as Florida continues to struggle all around, ending with a losing record of 16-17.

In a report by Ken Seguira at the AJC on the transfer, Reeves' father said:

“He saw (Stoudamire’s) vision and he believed in it,” Reeves Sr. said. “He believes in the vision. Fresh start, fresh coach, back home, just ready to start over and get going.”

Coach Stoudamire has high hopes for building up Reeves as one of the top players in Tech’s starting lineup. He was reportedly a top priority target for Stoudamire. On Reeves, he said:

“Kowacie will only get better as a basketball player. He’s athletically elite, he’s a ‘3-and-D’ guy who can make three-point shots. He’s a first-class individual who comes from a great family, and he’ll be a valued member of the Georgia Tech community and a great addition to our program.”
