Taking a look at Damon Stoudamire's first Georgia Tech coaching staff

Stoudamire has officially completed his first coaching staff

Damon Stoudamire has completed his first staff at Georgia Tech.

Stoudamire has spent this offseason trying to bring in key transfer portal talent and high school additions to this roster, while also bringing in a top staff. Stoudamire has hired coaches with head coach experience and that will be helpful in his first season in the ACC.

He also brought in some young coaches and support staff members and likes the balance that he has:

“I'm excited about the people we've been able to bring in to this program,” said Stoudamire. “This is a versatile group, and it’s a youthful group. I wanted some younger guys for the most part, but we do have some experience on the staff as well. I like the diversity, I like the different basketball minds that we have. We have a mixture of college and pro backgrounds that will serve us well.”

Lets take a look at the coaching staff that Stoudamire has assembled.

1. Karl Hobbs

Karl Hobbs

Karl Hobbs was a pivotal hire for Georgia Tech

This was a great hire for Georgia Tech and Hobbs is going to help Stoudamire on the court and on the recruiting trail.

Hobbs is a coaching veteran and has been at Rutgers since 2016. Previous stops include two stints at UConn (2011-2016 as the assistant coach and director of basketball administration, 1993-2000 assistant coach/recruiting coordinator), George Washington (2001-2010, head coach), and his first stop was at Boston University (1988-1993).

As the head coach, Hobbs led George Washington to three NCAA Tournament appearances and as an assistant coach at UConn in 2014, he was a part of the coaching staff that won the national championship.

2. Terry Parker

Parker had been on the UAB coaching staff since 2020. He had previously coached at Indiana State, Utah Valley and Nicholls State. He played at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay for two seasons before transferring to Louisiana Tech to finish his playing career.

3. Pershin Williams

A former graduate assistant with the Georgia Tech men’s basketball program, Pershin Williams joined the Yellow Jackets’ men’s basketball staff as assistant coach in April of 2023 following four seasons on the bench at Kennesaw State.

Now with 12 years of full-time college coaching experience, Williams helped head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim build the KSU program into a championship team in the Atlantic Sun Conference and an NCAA Tournament team in 2023. KSU went 26-9 last season, 15-3 in the A-Sun, and three Owls earned all-conference recognition after being picked to finish eighth in the pre-season conference poll (per ramblinwreck.com).

4. Nate Babcock

After two seasons as an assistant coach with the Grand Rapids Gold in the G League, Nate Babcock joined the Georgia Tech men’s basketball staff as quality control coach in June of 2023. He returns to the collegiate ranks after nine years on the professional level.

Babcock helps oversee and install basketball concepts and strategy for the Yellow Jackets, assist with player development and assist with practice and game planning (per ramblinwreck.com).

5. Bonzi Wells

Stoudamire hired Bonzi Wells, who has been the head coach of LeMoyne-Owen College for the past two seasons.

Here is Well's bio from the school's website:

During his time at LeMoyne-Owen, Wells went 23-16 in SIAC play and coached two players who were selected to all-conference teams. Former Magicians standout Jaquan Lawrence was selected to the inaugural HBCU All-Star game and was named SIAC Defensive player of the year under Wells. "I learned a lot from coach, it was a great experience getting to play under someone who played the game and had success at the highest level", said Lawrence.

Stoudamire has also hired multiple new members for the support staff.

I think this is a solid coaching staff, with Hobbs being the hire that I am most excited about. He is going to be pivotal in recruiting and developing players and has a successful track record as a head coach. Player development is going to be key with this group because while the transfers and high school additions to the roster are talented, many of them are also raw and will need time.

I think this is a good coaching staff and now Stoudamire can focus on getting ready for the season that is just a couple of months away now.
