Tech Women fall on the Road to 10th Ranked Notre Dame
The ladies entered the night midway through a trilogy of games versus ranked opponents to cap the season off. Coming off a rough loss to 24th ranked Florida State, the women marched into South Bend, Indiana to take on a red hot 22-4 Notre Dame team. The Jackets saw a similar result on the road, falling 76-53.
The Jackets started off the game on a big 8-0 run that sparked the Irish to take a timeout and things were starting off on the perfect foot for an upset. The Irish responded with an 8-0 run of their own to knot things up, and the Jackets broke the streak with a pair of points. The game then saw another 8-0 Irish run, progressing the game to 16-12 Notre Dame where the first quarter then ended at 17-12.
The second quarter saw more of a steady pace. Notre Dame maintained their lead from good shots and getting to the basket while Tech could not seem to get into the paint for the rest of the quarter after finding two baskets early. The Jackets entered the half with a six point deficit, having the score at 33-27.
Tech was showing fight behind a great team effort. Every player on the court was finding their way to get the ball through the net; however, the play to close out the second quarter foreshadowed the second half. In order to have a chance at this game, Tech would need to play flawless and they did not do that.
The third quarter began with Notre Dame pulling out to a double digit lead and the Irish defense was shutting the Jackets down. Tech went on an over two minute scoring drought that saw the Jackets fall to a 47-31 deficit that would be nearly impossible to overcome against a ranked opponent on the road. Notre Dame continued to extend their lead in a 22-12 third quarter where Tech was down 55-39 and at this point was playing for pride.
The fourth quarter saw an immediate three minute drought for the team and Notre Dame extended to a lead of over 20 points with under five minutes to go. The Jackets finished out the quarter with 14 points and fell to the Irish 76-53 on Thursday night.
Georgia Tech played a really good first half, but just did not have the talent this season to go toe-to-toe with the Fighting Irish as the game went on. They played at a high level and could definitely compete as they host 9th ranked Virginia Tech for senior night and their last game of the season on Sunday.
