No doubt June was a success for Georgia Tech Football Recruiting
Georgia Tech Football had seven commitments coming into the month of June. Coming out of a big month of official visits, Georgia Tech now leaves with 20 commitments and a top 20 recruiting class from the two major recruiting services (13th on Rivals and 20th 247Sports).
The Yellow Jackets scored some big wins by keeping an in-state four-star edge rusher in CJ Jackson away from SEC programs like Alabama, LSU, and Georgia and four-star wide receiver Koby Young, who was also being pursued by SEC programs. Four of their top five commitments are from the state of Georgia and there are still targets on the board for Georgia Tech. What has been a good summer for Brent Key and this staff could get even better.
While Key should get a ton of credit for the momentum, the assistant coaches played a huge role as well.
Special teams coach Ricky Brumfield has given Georgia Tech a recruiting presence in the state of Louisiana and was huge in helping the Yellow Jackets land Young, as was wide receivers coach Josh Crawford. Defensive line coach Marco Coleman was huge in helping land not only Jackson, but Trashun Griffin, and Landen Marshall this month.
The things that Georgia Tech must do now is land some of their remaining targets, while also keeping this class together. Winning on the field gives any program a boost in recruiting and the Yellow Jackets have a chance to show progress in year one under Key.
In the month of June alone, GT added an underrated quarterback prospect in Graham Knowles from the state of Texas and he will compete with Aaron Philo to be the starting quarterback in the future. Tech added three running backs (Trelain Maddox, Jaedon Matthews, and Khamani Alexander), two talented wide receivers (Young and Trey Horne), two tight ends (David Prince and Luke Harpring), an offensive line target from Parkview high school (Jordan Floyd), and intriguing pieces to the defense with DB's Nehemiah Chandler and Trajen Greco and defensive lineman in Jackson, Griffin, and Landen Marshall.
Currently on 247Sports, Georgia Tech has the ACC's fourth-ranked class, behind Clemson, North Carolina, and Pitt.
As far as the average player rating on 247Sports, Georgia Tech ranks 7th in the ACC, with an average player rating of 86.78. I think it is fair to point out that Georgia Tech is tied with North Carolina for the most commitments in the conference and that is contributing to the Yellow Jackets being above schools such as Florida State and Miami, who have a chance to surge in the rankings with the high-level prospects still on the board for both schools.
So who are the targets left for Georgia Tech on the board?
Four-star cornerback Troy Stevenson, three-star offensive lineman Jameson Riggs, four-star athlete Kylan Fox, three-star linebacker Jashad Presley, and defensive back Christian Pritchett are the guys to keep an eye on. All of these guys took official visits to Georgia Tech this month and the Yellow Jackets are in the mix.
In the 247Sports era (dating back to 1999), Georgia Tech has finished with a top 20 class twice (15th in 2007 and 19th in 2000). They are likely going to need to add some of those targets listed above to have a chance to top either of those, but it is within reach and not impossible. The highest-ranked class on 247Sports that Georgia Tech ever had under former head coach Geoff Collins was ranked 28th (2020) and I think Key and the staff have certainly put themselves in a position to top that if they close strong. I think it is likely they finish in the 20-25 range with a successful season, which would be huge for Key's first full recruiting class as the head coach and something to build on.
There is still work to do both on the recruiting trail and on the field this fall, but for the month that Key and this staff just put together, things are certainly looking up in Atlanta and the Yellow Jackets are worth keeping an eye on.
