2023 Bowl Projections: Where is Georgia Tech projected to play going into week eight?

Georgia Tech has not played in a bowl game since 2018

Georgia Tech has made appearances in bowl projections since beating Miami a couple of weeks ago and that picked up over the weekend when Georgia Tech was not even playing.

Now, it is not a given, but there are enough winnable games (Boston College, Virginia, and Syracuse) to think the Yellow Jackets can make their first bowl game since 2018.

So where and who is Georgia Tech projected to play this postseason?

One of the projections that stayed the same this week has Georgia Tech heading to Tampa to play in the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl to play Army. The Black Knights are 2-4 and head coach Jeff Monken is a former Georgia Tech assistant. Georgia Tech and Army have played four times and the Yellow Jackets are 3-1 in the series. The last time the two teams met was 2007 in Atlanta, a game Georgia Tech won 34-10.

One different projection has Georgia Tech heading West to play in its bowl game. An ESPN analyst has the Yellow Jackets playing in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl against TCU, who played in the national championship game last year. The Horned Frogs are 4-3 this year and blew out BYU this past weekend. Georgia Tech has played the Horned Frogs twice (1967 and 1968) and won both games.

Will Georgia Tech make a bowl game this season?

The Action Networks's Brett McMurphy also has Georgia Tech heading West for the postseason, but in a different bowl game and facing a different opponent. McMurphy has Georgia Tech playing in the Tony The Tiger Sun Bowl against Arizona. The Wildcats might have a 4-3 record, but don't be fooled, is an excellent football team. Their three losses have been against Mississippi State on the road in overtime, in double overtime to USC, and a close loss to Washington. Arizona could easily be 6-1 right now. Arizona is coming off of a blowout win over previously ranked Washington State. One interesting wrinkle in this projection was that McMurphy had Georgia Tech as an eight-point underdog in this game. Georgia Tech is 0-2 all-time against Arizona, losing to the Wildcats in 1994 and 1995.

One projection that has been consistent in bowl projections over the past couple of weeks has been Georgia Tech facing Memphis in the Military Bowl and that is where 247Sports analyst Brad Crawford is projecting the Yellow Jackets to play. Memphis is 4-2 after a close loss to Tulane. Georgia Tech has played Memphis three times and won twice. The two programs played from 1980-1982, with the Yellow Jackets winning in 1980 and 1982.

Obviously, we still have several weeks to go in the season and these bowl projections are largely meaningless for now, but it does say something in my opinion that Georgia Tech is projected to go to one after not being there in the preseason. A good step forward for this program would be getting to a bowl game this season.

Georgia Tech returns to the field Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium against Boston College (12:00 p.m. ACC network).
