Georgia Tech Football Transfer Profile: Jackson Long

Jackson Long is one of two tight end transfers that Georgia Tech brought in

One of the positions that Georgia Tech brought multiple transfers to was tight end. It was a position that did not receive much production in 2022 and the new offensive staff brought in two players to either jumpstart the position in 2023 or at least provide some depth. The Yellow Jackets lost a little bit of that depth when Peje' Harris opted to not finish his playing career and that left Tech with Dylan Leonard, Luke Benson, and Brett Seither (transfer from UGA) at the position.

The other player there is USF transfer Jackson Long. Long is a young player that redshirted last season with the Bulls and he only appeared in one game. He was a three-star recruit coming out of high school before signing with USF but opted to enter the transfer portal after just one season in Tampa.

In his high school career, Long had 28 catches for 510 yards (18.2 yards per carry) and five touchdowns his senior year and he also played defensive line, where he was voted Class 6A-Region 5 Most Valuable Defensive Lineman tallying 49 tackles, eight tackles for a loss and five sacks his final season (Per his Georgia Tech bio).

I think that Long is a capable receiving threat with intriguing athleticism. There is going to be competition between the tight ends to see who gets on the field the most and I would not completely count out Long from potentially making an impact this fall if he makes enough strides. New offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner is also the tight ends coach and will be coaching Long this season.

No tight end on Georgia Tech's roster topped 100 yards or caught a touchdown and that was a problem. Most offenses are going to function better when they have a threat at the tight end position and that will be something that Faulkner is going to be working on.

This is a position that will need to be a bigger factor in the passing game next season, especially with the losses Georgia Tech has had at wide receiver this offseason. Keep an eye out this spring for how the tight ends are doing and how the reps are being distributed.

Spring practice for the Yellow Jackets begins tomorrow.
