Georgia Tech releases depth chart ahead of week two game vs South Carolina State
Georgia Tech is getting ready for their week two matchup with South Carolina State and today, they released a depth chart for the first time this season.
There is of course no change at quarterback. Haynes King made his debut against Louisville and played a solid game, going 19-32 for 313 yards and three touchdowns. King will look to improve every week and he is certainly capable of playing even better.
It had been said all offseason that the running back group would be by committee and Brent Key was telling the truth. Last week's backfield was led by Trey Cooley, Jamal Haynes, and Dontae Smith and that is how it is listed this week. It will be either Smith, Haynes, or Cooley.
At the F receiver, Malik Rutherford is penciled in as a starter and he is one of the most explosive players on the Yellow Jackets offense. Chase Lane had a huge touchdown in his debut and is locked in at the Z receiver position. The other receiver spot will be either Abdul Janneh or Dominick Blaylock. Janneh had one catch for 33 yards against Louisville.
One notable thing about the receiver position is true freshman Eric Singleton Jr. Singleton caught a touchdown in his debut last Friday and is now the backup to Lane. The freshman has a bright future ahead. Christian Leary will be the backup to Rutherford.
Dylan Leonard is going to be the top tight end again for the Yellow Jackets this week, but look for Luke Benson and Brett Seither to get plenty of playing time. Seither caught a touchdown last week.
On the offensive line, there is one notable battle going on and that is at left tackle. Corey Robinson was the starter last season and for the game against Louisville, but he was replaced by true freshman Ethan Mackenny. Mackenny is going to be in the running to be the left tackle for the Yellow Jackets and the young player could be a future star player with coaching and development. The rest of the offensive line will be the same as last week, with Joe Fusile at left guard, Weston Franklin at center, Jordan Williams at right guard, and Jakiah Leftwich at right tackle. Franklin and Fusile had strong performances against Louisville.
On the defensive line, Sylvain Yondjouen and Kevin Harris will be at the end spots while Zeek Biggers and Makius Scott will be on the inside. Eddie Kelly, D'Quan Douse, Horace Lockett, and Kyle Kennard are the primary backups.
Paul Moala and Trenilyas Tatum are going to start at linebacker again. Kyle Efford and Braelen Oliver are the primary backups.
In the secondary, K.J. Wallace is going to start at nickel and he had two pass breakups in the opener against Louisville. Myles Sims and Ahmari Harvey are listed as the top corners and LaMiles Brooks at strong safety. Jaylon King or Clayton Powell-Lee will be at the other safety spot.
Gavin Stewart will be the kicker and David Shanahan will be the punter. Christian Leary and Jamal Haynes will be the kick returners and Dominick Blaylock will be at punt returner.
Georgia Tech will host South Carolina State at home this weekend. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
